OIM 533 - Western Pharmacology III: Gastrointestinal, Endocrine & Metabolic, and Infectious Credit(s): 2.50
The final course in the pharmacology sequence applies learned principles to the management of chronic diseases across additional organ systems. Topics encompass the pharmacologic treatment of gastrointestinal conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and motility disorders; endocrine disorders including diabetes, thyroid disease, hyperlipidemia, and hormone imbalances; and common infectious diseases managed with antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, and antiparasitic agents. Students evaluate the potential impact of herbal preparations on gastrointestinal medications and examine how antidiabetic agents, including metformin, sulfonylureas, and insulin, may interact with botanical hypoglycemics. The course also includes pharmacologic approaches to coagulation disorders, including warfarin, direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs), and antiplatelet medications, along with a review of common herb-drug interactions that heighten bleeding risk. Students are expected to exhibit proficiency in identifying contraindications and modifying herbal protocols within the context of pharmaceutical treatment regimens. Prerequisite(s): IM531 , IM532
